From Loss to Learning

Honey came to Mustang Valley under the weight of both love and grief. Her human adored her—showered her with affection, cookies, and companionship. But when he passed away from cancer, Honey and her two pasture mates were suddenly left without a future. Mustang Valley Sanctuary stepped in to ensure they didn’t end up in the system or worse.

Unlike many of the mustangs we rescue, Honey doesn’t fear humans. She was never abused. She was cherished—but never trained. The result? A confident, powerful horse who doesn’t yet understand boundaries, expectations, or how to coexist with humans in a way that’s safe for either party.

She’s Not Sweet—She’s Honey

Let’s be honest: Honey is not your soft, cuddly mustang. She’s not here to nuzzle your hand and gaze up at you with doe eyes. At least not yet.

She’s bold. Brassy. A little dramatic.

She’ll throw her head into you like you’re a life-sized salt lick. She’ll ignore your lead line, forget what “back up” means, and casually knock over anything in her path if it seems inconvenient. She’s not mean. She’s not dangerous. She’s just… spoiled.

But that’s why she’s in school. That’s why we train. Because we see who she can become.

A Scarred Face, Not a Broken Spirit

Before she found her forever home, Honey had a traumatic experience that left a visible mark. After being adopted from the BLM, she escaped her enclosure. A panicked farmhand tried to rope her and tied her to a dumpster. She smashed her face trying to escape.

Today, she bears a small, concave area under her right eye. It didn’t impact her breathing or her sight, but it’s a permanent reminder of how fragile trust can be—and how deeply it matters.

And yet… Honey hasn’t lost her spirit. Not even a little. She’s still bold, still beautiful, and still completely herself.

Why Honey Needs You

Honey needs more than hay and hoof trims—she needs someone who believes in the power of transformation. Someone who knows that mustangs don’t arrive perfect. That love is important, but training is kindness too.
