Hay there!
Join our mission to keep the Mustangs mustangs of Mustang Valley Sanctuary healthy and well-fed.
While it may seem premature to start raising funds for next winter’s hay needs, we at Mustang Valley Sanctuary are always looking ahead to ensure that our herd of rescued mustangs has enough food to stay healthy and happy. As we’ve seen in past years, the cost of hay can rise dramatically, especially if weather events impact hay production. That’s why we’re already planning ahead and raising funds to purchase hay in bulk during the upcoming summer months, and we hope you’ll join us in supporting our efforts.
Each horse requires about 30 pounds or more of hay per day. While some horses are content to eat from large round bales, others are bullied away from the communal bales by more dominant horses in the herd. These meeker horses, along with the older ones, have trouble getting to the round bales even with fencing. To make sure all horses get the required amount of hay, square bales are delivered once a week, but the cost of both round and square bales can quickly add up. We spend over $3,000 a month on hay alone!
Needless to say, the cost of hay is a constant concern at Mustang Valley Sanctuary, and this year, the price has skyrocketed due to drought conditions and rising diesel costs. Another challenge we face is sourcing hay. Our regular hay supplier doesn’t always have enough to meet our needs, so we have to source from other producers at a higher cost. In addition, we must have the funds available to buy hay at the beginning of the season, which requires planning and lots of money.
Storing hay is another challenge. We have limited storage space, and stacking hay bales requires a lot of manpower. If the hay isn’t properly stored, it can become moldy and even cause a fire. In addition, limited storage capacity means we have to buy hay more frequently and pay for extra storage space.
At the Mustang Valley Sanctuary, we’re dedicated to providing the best care possible for Mikayla, Moon Star, and the other mustangs who make up our herd. With your help, we can ensure that they have enough hay to get through the spring, summer, winter, and beyond. Your donation will go directly towards purchasing and storing hay and ensuring that our mustangs have everything they need to thrive.
