Healing Hooves: Veterans Find Solace at Mustang Valley Sanctuary

Veterans find unexpected healing through connection with Mustangs.
Mustang Valley Sanctuary

Our recent Veterans Weekend was a truly transformative experience.

The sanctuary was filled with a unique energy as these brave men and women found solace and connection through their interactions with our Mustangs.

Our days were filled with simple yet profound activities.

When the first veterans arrived, their initial question was, “Are we going to ride the horses?” This is a common expectation in many therapeutic programs. However, our approach at Mustang Valley Sanctuary is different. We believe in the power of building relationships, not just riding.

Mornings began with the warmth of a campfire, where veterans shared coffee and stories. They then joined in with daily chores, caring for the Mustangs and connecting with the natural rhythm of the sanctuary.

A highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly the round pen sessions.

This is where the magic truly happened. By observing the Mustangs, veterans learned to focus on the present moment, to listen, and to problem-solve. It was a journey of self-discovery as they found parallels between their experiences and the challenges faced by these wild horses.

“We’re hopeful for their future, but it’s a long road ahead. We need the support of the community to ensure these mustangs can lead the lives they deserve,” Mary stated, inviting the Sanctuary’s followers to continue their support through sponsorship and donations. This call to action serves as a reminder of the impact collective efforts can have on the lives of mustangs in need.

Laughter, shared stories, and a deep sense of camaraderie filled the air.

As the sun began to set, we gathered around the campfire once more. It was in these moments that the healing truly solidified.

We were so inspired by the impact of this weekend that we’re excited to announce another Veterans’ Retreat.

This retreat is open to all veterans, regardless of previous participation.

If you know a veteran who could benefit from this unique experience, please encourage them to reach out to our Peer Coordinator, Chris. We believe in the power of human connection and equine therapy to foster healing and resilience.
