Equine-Assisted Trauma Rehabilitation
At Mustang Valley Sanctuary, we believe in the transformative power of horses. Beyond our mission of rescuing and rehabilitating Mustangs, we extend our passion for healing to people who have endured trauma. Through our equine-assisted trauma rehabilitation program, we provide a safe environment for individuals to heal and regain control of their lives.
A journey of healing
Mustang Mary, the founder of Mustang Valley Sanctuary, has a personal connection to the impact of trauma. Her father, a Vietnam War veteran, experienced severe post-traumatic stress, leaving a profound mark on Mary’s upbringing. Witnessing the lack of support available to veterans and trauma survivors first-hand, she felt compelled to make a difference.
Equine-Assisted Growth and Learning (EGALA)
Our trauma rehabilitation program uses Equine-Assisted Growth and Learning (EGAL), a powerful therapeutic modality. EGAL focuses on reestablishing neural pathways between the brainstem and neocortex, empowering individuals to respond to trauma with resilience and self-awareness. During experiential interactions with our horses, participants forge a path towards recovery from trauma.
The healing bond with mustangs
Mustangs possess an innate ability to connect with human emotions. Their empathetic nature allows them to become extraordinary partners in the healing process. Through our program, individuals form deep bonds with the Mustangs, experiencing their unconditional, undemanding support. These majestic creatures offer a safe space where participants can explore their emotions, overcome barriers, and embrace personal growth.
Support for our most vulnerable
We thoughtfully design our trauma rehabilitation program to cater to the unique needs of each participant. Through a six-week course, individuals embark on a journey towards healing. Group sessions provide a supportive environment, allowing Mustang pairing based on responses and fostering a sense of community. For veterans or individuals facing immediate crisis or homelessness, we offer individual sessions to provide focused support.
