Meet Huckleberry Finn:
Our Surprise Baby Mustang With a Big Personality
Sometimes, life at Mustang Valley Sanctuary is planned.
And sometimes, life sneaks in on four tiny legs, with a gray coat, a little star on his forehead, and absolutely no concern for our schedule.
Meet Huckleberry Finn, our newest — and most unexpected — little mustang miracle.
Huckleberry is the son of Nala, an Eagle Mountain HMA mare who came to us with her injured colt, Liam, at her side. Liam was only about two months old when he arrived, and all of our attention was focused on helping him heal, helping Nala settle in, and giving this little family the safety they so badly needed.
What we did not know was that Nala had one more secret tucked away.
A tiny one.
A very cute one.
A very expensive one.
The Surprise We Never Saw Coming
Around January, we started looking at Nala and thinking, “Hmm… she’s getting a little rounder than expected.”
Now, at a sanctuary, you learn not to jump to conclusions. Sometimes horses gain weight. Sometimes winter coats make everyone look fluffier. Sometimes you stare at a mare long enough and convince yourself you are imagining things.
But Nala kept growing.
And growing.
And eventually, it became pretty clear that she was not just enjoying extra hay.
Then, on June 5, Nala gave birth to the sweetest little colt: Huckleberry Finn.
Mama and baby are doing well, and from the moment he arrived, Huckleberry made it very clear that he was not here to be ordinary.
A Tiny Colt With Main Character Energy
Huckleberry looks so much like his big brother Liam that it almost feels like Nala hit “copy and paste.”
He is gray, soft, curious, and has the sweetest little star on his forehead. He is the kind of baby who makes volunteers stop mid-chore just to smile. The kind who makes everyone say, “Okay, just one more picture.” The kind who can turn an exhausting day into a good one just by wobbling across the paddock.
And his personality?
Let’s just say the name Huckleberry Finn fits.
This little guy is adventurous.
Not long after he was born, Huckleberry decided he needed to meet the boys next door — his brother Liam and his buddy Simba. Now, baby horses are delicate, and yearlings can play rough, so Huckleberry and Nala are kept safely separated from them.
But Huckleberry apparently did not read the safety memo.
One of our volunteers watched as this tiny newborn colt found just enough room in the fence to squeeze through and hop right in with Liam and Simba.
The boys walked over, gave him a gentle sniff, and Huckleberry — having completed his very important mission — popped right back through the fence like nothing had happened.
We fixed that gap very quickly.
Huckleberry, however, seemed quite pleased with himself.
Cute, Yes. Cheap? Absolutely Not.
Here is the honest part.
We love Huckleberry. Everyone loves Huckleberry. He is deliciously cute, full of life, and impossible not to adore.
But babies are a lot.
A lot of time.
A lot of care.
A lot of vet bills.
A lot of long-term responsibility.
Huckleberry will stay with his mama until Nala decides it is time to wean him. That may be months from now, or it may take much longer. Then there will be training, handling, ongoing feed, farrier care, veterinary care, and eventually gelding.
A foal is not a short-term commitment. For a sanctuary, it is years of responsibility before that baby is fully grown.
And Huckleberry has already needed a little extra watching. He has had some tummy trouble, and he also has a small umbilical hernia that will need veterinary attention.
Right now, he is happy, safe, loved, and living his best baby life beside his mama.
But he needs a village.
Actually, he needs a herd of humans.

Nala did not ask to carry a foal while trying to survive.
Liam did not ask to arrive injured and in need.
But now they are here.
