Meet Sabrina: the spirited matriarch of Mustang Valley

A tall and slender bay horse, Sabrina’s journey to our sanctuary began years ago when she narrowly escaped a grim fate at the kill pen. A call came in to us from someone at an auction house who had witnessed a troubling sight – Sabrina, standing defiantly as potential buyers hesitated to bid on her. Her reputation was formidable; every attempt to touch her mouth resulted in her rearing and striking out, and she vehemently resisted any attempts to saddle her.

A difficult past doesn’t define her.

Sabrina’s challenging behavior hinted at a traumatic past, possibly as a camp horse exposed to relentless handling. However, once you were on her back, she transformed into a well-behaved, patient, and nurturing teacher. Sabrina played a pivotal role in helping many individuals at Mustang Valley Sanctuary learn to ride, including actor Tom Blythe in preparation for his role in the series “Billy the Kid.”

Sabrina makes a forever friend.

Very quickly, Sabrina’s bond with our sanctuary’s quarter horse Cedar became unbreakable. Their companionship was a driving force behind our decision not to seek a new home for the bay mare. While a minor knee issue limited her suitability for jumping or heavy work, she was perfect for imparting wisdom to sanctuary guests who were willing to listen.

Chronic issues resurfacing.

Sabrina’s history took a concerning turn when she began experiencing chronic health issues, particularly chronic diarrhea. The dedicated efforts of our team led to improvements in her condition, but this year, her health has taken a more noticeable downturn. Sabrina has become tired and withdrawn, sometimes choosing solitude over the company of her cherished companions.

Concerned for her well-being, we consulted with a veterinarian who conducted blood tests. Although Lyme’s disease was ruled out, elevated liver enzymes and other indicators hinted at underlying liver issues. Subsequently, a lump on her side was discovered, prompting an ultrasound examination.

How to support Sabrina and her herd

Sabrina’s future remains uncertain as we await the results of further blood tests, highlighting the considerable costs associated with the comprehensive care our rescued animals require. We are steadfast in our commitment to providing her the care and comfort she deserves, and we hold her in our hearts as we navigate this challenging chapter.

Sabrina’s journey is a poignant example of the intricate and deeply meaningful relationships we forge with the animals we rescue. Her story underscores the vital role played by our generous donors and dedicated volunteers in safeguarding these magnificent beings. Update

Some horses come here and stay for a month, a year or two. Others come and stay with us for their lives. As you all know Sabrina was incredibly special to us all. My heart is broken as I write this, I just can’t bare the task of telling you all individually. But wanted you all to know first hand from me. Sabrina galloped off into the moon last night.

Sabrina was so much to so many.
She was my love, my guide, my teacher and my dearest friend. She was Cedars best friend and companion for 8 years. She taught so many to ride and to be patient. To really look inside the horse and be present.

She worked with veterans and others that needed to overcome obstacles in their path. She was kind and beautiful and perfect and so loved by so many. I am so grateful to have been given the honor to share my path with her for 8 years.

Here is a Poem that I wanted to share.
She is gone A poem by David Harkins

You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back
or you can open your eyes and see all she has left.

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
or you can be full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her and only that she’s gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

I am so grateful for you all and I know she was also.
